B.C.’s premier and other local leaders braved a downpour to tout the start of construction on Langley’s next two schools on Thursday, Nov. 13. The local leaders gathered on 76 Avenue near 212 Street, at the muddy site where construction crews are building a new secondary and middle school. Both are currently dubbed the Smith schools, after their local neighbourhood, as the school district considers permanent names. Premier David Eby, Education Minister Lisa Beare, and Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma joined Langley School Board Chair Candy Ashdown and Township Mayor Eric Woodward for the event.
The new schools will have 2,800 new students spaces, with 1,900 at the high school and 900 at the new middle school. They will complement the existing R.E. Mountain Secondary, which is currently the only high school in the Willoughby neighbourhood, and the two middle schools already in the area.
Ma thanked former Langley-area MLAs Andrew Mercier and Megan Dykeman for their advocacy for the project in the past. She also noted this was the first joint school campus construction project in the Lower Mainland and the largest single school capital investment in B.C.
“Building these two schools together is an efficient way to help us keep pace with Langley’s rapid growth,” Ma said.
