A new project is helping North Shore seniors get back on their feet until they can find a permanent home.
On Wednesday Hollyburn Community Services Society officially opened Morningstar, a new safe house in North Vancouver offering support to seniors experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, or neglect.
Located on East 17th Street, the safe house can accommodate up to eight residents aged 55 and older in its seven bedrooms, providing short-term, home-like accommodation. Residents will receive support from Hollyburn in securing long-term housing, accessing income assistance, connecting to healthcare, and navigating other community services.
Hollyburn was able to purchase and renovate the house through $3.9 million in provincial funding.
Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale, said the provincial government is pleased to support this community initiative.
“There is a narrative on the North Shore sometimes, that when we provide services like this for vulnerable people in our communities, for people who are facing homelessness, that we are somehow inviting this problem in from outside of the North Shore … The reality couldn’t be further from that,” Ma said. “The reality is that these people who need help are already in our communities.”
The safe house complements Hollyburn’s existing senior outreach initiatives, which assist more than 300 at-risk seniors annually in finding and maintaining affordable housing and living independently.
Seniors needing help can access Hollyburn’s seniors intake line at 604-968-3721.
