First tenants moving in at North Vancouver’s new affordable housing

Today, there is just one folding chair out in the sunshine on the south-facing balconies of North Vancouver’s newest affordable housing project. But plenty more are on the way.

Residents have begun moving into the 89 below-market apartments at Timberline I, the first phase of the total redevelopment of the City of North Vancouver’s North Shore Neighbourhood House lands on East Second Street.

Twenty-seven of the homes in the six-storey building from the non-profit Catalyst Community Developments Society are reserved at affordable rates for renters who earn lower- and middle-incomes – $1,158 per month for a studio or one-bedroom to $2,150 for three bedrooms.

Speaking for the provincial government, which put up $11 million for the project when it ran into post-pandemic cost-overruns, North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP MLA Bowinn Ma said the new affordable homes will “mean the world” to their future tenants.

That includes at least one single-mother who Ma said she knows has had to live in constant fear of eviction since the loss of her husband.

“When I called her to congratulate her on her acceptance into the building, I cannot help but remember the tremor in her voice,” she said. “She has a lot more challenges that she’ll continue to have to deal with, but the one challenge that is no longer on her plate is knowing that she and her daughter will have a safe and stable home for as long as they need to.”

The main floor of the building will be an 18,000-square-foot seniors’ respite centre to be run by CareBC. They are targeting a spring opening.

Under construction immediately to the south of Timberline I is a brand new, 30,000-square-foot replacement facility for North Shore Neighbourhood House and 18 storeys of below-market housing.
