Abbotsford Middle School will soon be able to handle more students than ever before thanks to the latest round of school expansions from the provincial government, which includes eight new classrooms for Abbotsford.

Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma explained that delivering these new classrooms is of the utmost importance for families, especially as the population in B.C. continues to increase each year.

“The demand for school spaces is growing in communities across B.C., and we’re working urgently to deliver schools faster,” Ma said. “We’re working to speed up delivery, and our historic capital investments are making real progress across the province.”

According to the provincial government, the introduction of a prefabricated eight-classroom addition will allow Abbotsford Middle School to host 200 more students.

This increased student capacity will help to address the overcapacity issue that Abbotsford schools are facing, with the school district currently operating at 103.3 per cent capacity.

The provincial government report shows that while the majority of the overcapacity issues are in kindergarten facilities, local elementary and secondary schools are also having to deal with more students than they can handle.
